Africentric Personal Development Shop, Inc. (APDS) is a family-centered behavioral healthcare center specializing in substance use disorder and mental health treatment and prevention; domestic violence intervention and prevention for men and women perpetrators; and personal development programs for youth, teenagers and young adults. APDS is the behavioral healthcare arm of the National Center for Urban Solutions which is the parent and management company for a family of 5 organizations that help individuals and families in urban, suburban, and rural communities achieve their goals in education, employment, entrepreneurship, and holistic health and wellness.  APDS is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization primarily funded by the ADAMH Board of Franklin County and the cost for services is very minimal or no cost at all. Medicaid and other insurances are accepted. APDS has served over 27,000 individuals and families since it was founded in Columbus, Ohio by Drs. Moriba and Barbara Kelsey in 1988.

Prevention Services

1. Domestic Violence Intervention and Prevention Classes

APDS provides prevention education classes to male and female perpetrators (18 years and older) for the intervention and prevention of domestic violence.

2. S.M.A.R.T. 2.0 (2.0 offers Science-Social learning, Mentoring-Math, AOD prevention-Art, Reading-Recreation, and Technology-Travel)

We provide a 9-week summer day camp for 120 youth ages 6 to 12 with emphasis on having fun, academic enhancement, social emotional learning, and character counts development.

3. Unified Community and Neighborhood Network (UCANN)

The Africentric Personal Development Shop (APDS) has been a part of this community for decades. To contribute to making sure that this community is around for many more decades, we support the future of our community… Our Youth. UCANN works to stop youth-involved violence in our Columbus community. We arm our young people between the ages of 11 and 22 with the tools they need to become champions of nonviolence. Then UCANN participants may use these tools to help create vibrant, safe, and innovative communities.

4. Urban GEMS (Gardening Entrepreneurs Motivating Sustainability)

The APDS Urban GEMS program builds awareness, knowledge, and skills that are designed to prevent addiction and reduce high school dropout rates by enriching the science, health, personal and career development curricular offerings for youth and communities at high risk of poverty. This program utilizes aeroponic food production as a vehicle to enrich the lives and learning of the young people in the program through project-based learning around scientific discovery, math lessons, historical analysis, nutritional principles, consumer science education and the creative and language arts.

5. Personal Development Program

The APDS Personal Development Education Program provides youth & tennagers with the education and tools for life skills management through self-development.

Our Personal Development program encompasses an Africentric Rites of Passage component, providing participants with a culturally specific historical background useful for self-esteem development.

The Personal Development program consists of two youth programs targeted to youth ages 9-12 and 13-17.

6. Mindful Reactions (Anger Management)

The APDS Mindful Reactions Program is a 12-week prevention course that helps teenagers & young adults build emotional control, manage anger, and reduce violence using the Resiliency Model and Africentric principles. It’s based on Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg’s 7 C’s of resilience and incorporates teachings from Nguzo Saba, Ma’at, and Nonviolent Communication. The program is an anger management program that encourages participants to recognize their strengths and apply them in daily life. Key goals include learning self-control, building healthy relationships, and making positive behavioral changes. Participants are expected to attend regularly, engage actively, and respect group confidentiality.

TREATMENT SERVICES

APDS is continuously evaluating and elevating our treatment and prevention programs to be more flexible to adjust to each client’s rate of recovery. The structure and length of our evidence-based programs remain the same because they have proven to be successful.  Duration of treatment varies depending on the individual’s specific needs and progress.

 

ASAM Level 1 – Outpatient Treatment

APDS clients are required to attend two (2) two-hour lecture/group sessions per week which are designed to stimulate thought, challenge their perceptions, offer culturally relevant solutions and develop positive self-images. In addition, clients are also required to attend a minimum of five (5) individual sessions with their primary counselor, submit to random breathalyzer and urine drug screens and at the end of their 13-week treatment episode, complete a Relapse Prevention Plan and an Anonymous Client Survey Form.

ASAM Level 2.1 – Intensive Outpatient Program

The APDS Intensive Outpatient Services (IOP) is a 12-week education, intervention and treatment program for male and female clients with substance use disorders (SUD). Clients are required to attend three 3-hour Lecture/Group sessions per week, which are designed to stimulate thought, challenge their perceptions, offer culturally relevant solutions and develop positive self-images. Clients are required to attend a minimum of five (5) individual sessions per 3 12-week episode with their primary counselor and submit to random urine screens. At the completion of their 12-week treatment episode, clients are required to complete a Relapse Prevention Plan and an Anonymous Client Satisfaction Survey Form.

APDS Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)

The purpose of this program is to have clients (18 yrs. and older) achieve and maintain abstinence from substance abuse. The Medication Assisted Treatment curriculum is designed to address SUD issues of the general population with a specialization for the forensic population. Weekly counseling and one monthly medical visit prescribing Vivitrol or weekly medical visits prescribing Suboxone to include urine drug screens. APDS offers open-ended enrollment to increase access to services, allowing for program openings to be immediately filled by clients in need of services.

Enrollment into (ASAM Level 2.1) Medication Assisted Treatment episode includes a comprehensive bio-psychosocial assessment to determine a client’s appropriateness for engagement in the level of care recommended. APDS MAT curriculum is designed in four phases: 1) Evaluation/Stabilization – 2) Education/Implementation – 3) Transition – 4) Maintenance.

SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER CASE MANAGEMENT

Substance use disorder case management services means those activities provided to assist and support individuals in gaining access to needed medical, social, educational and other services essential to meeting basic human needs. Case management services may include interactions with family members, other individuals or entities. Examples of case management activities include: coordinating: client assessments, treatment planning and crisis intervention services; providing training and facilitating linkages for the use of community resources; monitoring service delivery; obtaining or assisting individuals in obtaining necessary services, for example, financial assistance, housing assistance, food, clothing, medical services, educational services, vocational services, recreational services, etc.; assisting individuals in becoming involved with self-help support groups; assisting individuals in increasing social support networks with family members, friends, and/or organizations; assisting individuals in performing daily living activities; and coordinating criminal justice services.

MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT

APDS specializes in dual diagnosis treatment and co-occurring treatment: depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder PTSD, Bipolar, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD. Therapies provided for dual diagnoses: motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectic behavioral therapy, trauma-focused therapy. RECOVERY SUPPORT PROGRAMS

AFTERCARE PROGRAMMING

Substance use disorder is considered a relapsing disease, clients may need to continue treatment for an extended period of time. Thus, APDS places strong emphasis on a flexible aftercare program. We have built a supportive community that is family centered. Materials and consulting sessions for educating families about diseases and treatment processes.

Peer Recovery Support

Peer Recovery Support is a community-based service for individuals with a mental health or substance use disorder delivered by a person living in recovery from a mental health or substance use disorder.  Peer Recovery Support activities promote recovery, self-determination, self-advocacy, well-being, and independence. Services are individualized, recovery-focused, and based on a relationship that supports a person’s ability to promote their own recovery. Delivered with trauma informed care and diversity competence that encourage self-direction and informed choice. My be delivered individually or in a group.

Grief and Loss Peer Support Group

If you or a family member are experiencing emotional and/or functional challenges following a significant loss such as death of a loved one, divorce, loss of health, job, home, or other life transitions. Symptoms may involve sadness, anger, guilt, numbness, isolation, and/or difficulty adjusting to daily life. APDS offers a program to help you help yourself. This program meets weekly for 2 hours. Overall length of program varies depending on the individual’s specific needs and progress. The following are the overall goals of the program:

      • Goal 1: Acknowledge and Process Grief and Loss
      • Goal 2: Develop and Practice Healthy Coping Skills
      • Goal 3: Strengthen Social and Emotional Support
      • Goal 4: Rebuild Meaning and Purpose After Loss
