Peer Recovery Support

Support from Someone Who’s Walked the Path

What Is Peer Recovery Support?

Peer Recovery Support is a community-based service for individuals with a mental health or substance use disorder delivered by a person living in recovery from a mental health or substance use disorder.

How APDS Helps

Our Peer Recovery Support Specialists walk alongside you in your journey, offering:

  • One-on-One Mentorship: guidance, encouragement, and accountability from someone who understands recovery firsthand.

  • Connection to Resources: help navigating treatment options, housing, employment, and community supports.

  • Skill Building: practical tools for relapse prevention, stress management, and healthier daily routines.

  • Emotional Support: a safe space to talk through challenges with someone who truly “gets it.”

  • Community Integration: opportunities to connect with groups and networks that reinforce recovery.

  • Role Modeling: proof that recovery is possible and sustainable.

How You Get Better

Peer Recovery Support is effective because it’s built on shared experience, trust, and hope. Clients often find that working with a peer:

  • Reduces feelings of isolation and stigma.

  • Increases motivation to stay engaged in recovery.

  • Builds confidence and self-advocacy skills.

  • Provides consistent encouragement during setbacks and progress alike.

  • Strengthens long-term commitment to recovery.
